Mudflow Sidoarjo BREAKING NEWS!
8 killed in Indonesian gas pipe

PORONG, East Java (AP): A gas pipe explosion that shot flames hundreds of meters into the air killed at least eight people in East Java province, officials said on Thursday, as rescue workers searched for more bodies.
The blowout Wednesday night occurred close to a massive mud flow that began surging from a gas exploration site on seismically charged Java island six months ago. Authorities suspect the weight of the thick sludge caused the underground pipe to collapse and explode.
"We have now found eight bodies," said search and rescue official Yayun Rianto, most of them police and soldiers who had been securing the site.

The mud flow that triggered Wednesday's blast started after an accident occurred deep in a drilling shaft in May. More than 450 hectares of land have since been swallowed by thick, dark sludge pouring steadily from the earth and 10,000 people displaced.
Workers are containing the so-called "mud volcano" with an ever-expanding network of dams, and pumping some of the mud to sea. They are also trying stop the flow by capping it, though many experts say the effort is futile.
Authorities have said the area is sinking under the weight of the mud and must be abandoned.
